Understanding Core Setups

Move from simply following lab instructions to understanding how common setups work, why apparatus choices matter, and what to watch while a reaction or separation is running.

Who This Stage Is For

This stage is for learners who know the basics of organic lab work and want to understand setup logic, apparatus choice, routine reaction control, and first-level bench interpretation more clearly.

✓ Current Level

This stage is for you if…

  • You can follow a basic setup, but do not always understand why it is built that way.
  • You want to understand reflux, distillation, TLC, routine reaction setups, and practical apparatus choices.
  • You are starting to make small bench decisions rather than only copying a protocol.

You may want Stage 1 first if…

  • You are still learning core glassware handling, basic setup safety, and routine lab habits.
  • You still need a stronger foundation in basic operations.

You may move to Stage 3 later if…

  • You are beginning Schlenk work, air-sensitive techniques, higher-risk vacuum systems, or research-style planning.

What You Will Learn Here

Stage 2 helps you understand common setups as working systems and connect apparatus choice, method choice, reaction control, basic analysis, and notebook reasoning.

1. Apparatus Logic & Setup Design

Learn to read common setups as working systems, not just collections of parts.

2. Separation & Purification

Learn why one separation method fits a mixture better than another, and how to compare practical purification options.

3. Intro Synthesis & Reaction Control

Learn how to build, run, monitor, and stabilize routine reaction systems at the bench.

4. Intro Analysis & Identification

Use IR and basic NMR as practical checks for expected products and obvious mismatch.

5. First Steps in Route Design

Begin connecting route choice, setup, monitoring, purification, and evidence.

6. Upgrading Your Lab Notebook

Turn setup choices, observations, and monitoring results into usable notebook evidence and first interpretations.
